Planning a move is easier when you understand two things upfront: when movers are busiest, and what information they need to quote your job accurately. If you have any flexibility, choosing the right dates and getting the estimate details right can make the entire process smoother.
Most moving companies have a clear peak season, and it affects everything from availability to pricing.
Spring and summer are the busiest months for movers, with May through August typically being the most in-demand. During this time, schedules fill quickly, weekend slots go first, and rates can be higher due to demand. If you must move during peak season, booking early gives you the best choice of dates and times.
If you want the easiest scheduling and often the best value, December through February is usually the slowest stretch. Movers tend to have more openings, and you are more likely to get the date you want without competing for limited availability.
Even if you are moving in a quieter season, the last week of the month can be surprisingly busy. Apartment leases and storage rentals often end around the same time, so crews book up quickly. If you can move mid-month, you will usually have more options.
A good quote is based on clear details. The more accurate the information, the more accurate the pricing, staffing, and timing will be.
Having these ready helps speed up the process:
Virtual estimates (video walkthroughs)
These live video calls let movers view your space without an in-person visit. They are fast, convenient, and helpful for identifying access challenges and large items early.
On-site estimates
For larger moves or complicated access, an in-person walkthrough can be the best option. It allows a mover to confirm the layout, spot tricky areas, and plan the job more precisely.
Many movers use inventory tools to build a room-by-room list of what is going. This helps avoid surprises, such as underestimating time, needing extra labor, or discovering specialty items on moving day.
