Do Not Load List

Also known as: prohibited items list, unmovable items

Definition

The Do Not Load list is the federally-defined list of items that interstate moving carriers cannot transport — including most hazmat materials, perishables, plants (some states), and items that would damage other shipments.

In practice

What it means on a move.

Common Do Not Load items: propane and other compressed-gas tanks, gasoline and fuels, aerosols above certain volumes, ammunition (volume limits), pool chemicals, paint thinner and other solvents, charged fire extinguishers, fireworks, scuba tanks, plants (some states quarantine), perishable food, prescription medications. The full list is in FMCSA's 'Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move' booklet.

Stakes

Why this matters.

Customers regularly discover at the loading dock that items they intended to ship are not eligible. Pre-move planning includes disposing of, transferring, or transporting these items separately. The customer's car or rental truck can carry these items; the moving truck cannot.

Our process

How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Muscleman Elite provides the complete Do Not Load list at booking. We help customers identify which items they have that are on the list and plan accordingly. We do not transport these items even with customer waiver — federal regulation is firm.

Questions we get

About Do Not Load List.

What if I want to ship a Do Not Load item anyway?
You can't — federal regulation prohibits the carrier from accepting it. Some items have workarounds (a customer can dispose of pool chemicals; a propane tank can be drained and certified safe to ship; ammunition in legal quantities is fine). Plan for these around the move date.
What about firearms?
Firearms (unloaded) in legal quantities within Texas are routinely handled. Loaded firearms are never accepted. Ammunition has volume limits per federal regulation. The full firearms policy is provided at booking.
