Shipping Weight

Also known as: certified shipping weight, net weight

Definition

Shipping weight is the certified weight of the household goods being moved — measured at a certified scale, derived from the difference between the truck's loaded weight and its empty (tare) weight.

In practice

What it means on a move.

Interstate moves are typically priced on shipping weight (the federal interstate tariff structure). The carrier weighs the truck empty (tare weight), loads the household goods, weighs again (loaded weight), and the difference is the shipping weight. Customers receive copies of the scale tickets. The scale must be certified by the state Department of Agriculture or equivalent — CAT Scales (common at truck stops), state-certified weigh stations, and some carrier-operated certified scales are acceptable.

Stakes

Why this matters.

Shipping weight determines the line-haul charge on interstate moves. Customers verifying the invoice should match the scale tickets to the BOL. For PPM military moves, the shipping weight directly determines the reimbursement amount. For corporate-relo moves, the RMC reviews the shipping-weight tickets as part of the post-move cost reconciliation. Always keep copies of weight tickets.

Our process

How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Muscleman Elite weighs every interstate move at certified scales — tare weight at origin (before loading) and loaded weight (after). Tickets are issued to the customer at delivery. For PPM military moves we coordinate destination weight tickets as well. For corporate-relo, the tickets feed into the RMC's reconciliation file.

Questions we get

About Shipping Weight.

How is shipping weight calculated?
Loaded truck weight minus empty (tare) truck weight = shipping weight. Both weights from a certified scale, both tickets retained.
Can I dispute the shipping weight?
Yes. Re-weighing at delivery is your right (per FMCSA on interstate moves). The carrier must accommodate a re-weigh request before delivery is complete. The re-weigh ticket either confirms or revises the original tariff.
