Definition
A SIT (Storage in Transit) charge is the daily or monthly fee for storing household goods during the transit window between origin pack-out and destination delivery. Common when the destination move-in date lags the origin move-out.
In practice
What it means on a move.
For interstate moves, SIT typically runs $1-$3 per day per 100 lbs of household goods. A 7,000-lb household stored for 30 days might cost $1,400-$4,200 in SIT charges. For corporate-relo authorized files, SIT is typically covered in the corporate tariff. For self-financed moves, SIT is on the estimate.
Stakes
Why this matters.
SIT is a real cost that customers should plan for. The closing-date gap is common (lease ends, new home not ready). Carriers should communicate SIT pricing during the estimate phase, not at delivery time.
Our process
How Muscleman Elite handles it.
Muscleman Elite includes SIT charges on the written estimate for any move where the closing-date gap is identified at booking. We use climate-controlled storage and bill on a daily or 30-day basis depending on the duration.
