Crating Charge
Also known as: Custom crate fee, Build-a-crate charge
Definition
A crating charge is the additional fee for building a custom wooden crate around a specific item — typically fine art, antiques, mirrors, glass tables, or other oversize or unique items that need rigid protection beyond standard packing.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Crating cost depends on item size and protection level. A small framed artwork might cost $80-150 to crate; a large painting or mirror $200-400; a complex shape like a sculpture $400-800. The crate is built around the item with custom-cut foam to immobilize, then the item is wrapped in protective layers before insertion. Crates are wood-frame construction screwed (not nailed) so they can be opened at destination without damage. Crating is typically declared on the bill of lading.
Stakes
Why this matters.
Custom crating is the difference between insurable transit and gamble for high-value items. A $5,000 painting in a standard mirror box is exposed to shock, vibration, and pressure damage. The same painting in a custom crate with foam isolation is fully protected. Insurance for declared crated items is typically 100% replacement value vs $0.60/lb for un-crated items.
