Hourly Rate

Also known as: Local Move Rate, Crew Rate, Hourly Charge

Definition

The Hourly Rate is the per-hour charge a moving carrier bills for local moves — covering the crew, the truck, fuel, equipment, and pad-wrap — with a defined minimum (typically 2 hours) and proration unit (typically 15 minutes) stated on the written estimate.

In practice

What it means on a move.

Local moves are quoted at an hourly rate that depends on crew size (2, 3, 4, or more movers), truck size, and any specialty handling. The clock starts when the crew arrives at the origin and runs continuously through loading, drive time between origin and destination, and unloading — stopping when the crew finishes at the destination. The hourly rate covers labor, truck, fuel, pads, dollies, straps, and basic packing materials in many cases. Add-on charges for stair carries, long carries, hoists, crating, or extra trips are billed separately from the base hourly rate and stated on the written estimate.

Stakes

Why this matters.

The hourly rate is the headline number customers compare when shopping local movers, but the headline alone is not a fair comparison. A $150/hour rate with a clean tariff and 15-minute proration can come out cheaper than a $120/hour rate with a 1-hour minimum on every accessorial, a 4-hour minimum on the move itself, or buried pad-wrap charges. Comparing written estimates side-by-side — total expected hours, minimum, proration unit, and accessorial list — is the right way to compare carriers. A clean hourly rate from a carrier whose tariff matches their estimate is more valuable than a low hourly rate hiding fees.

Our process

How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Muscleman Elite bills local moves hourly with a 2-hour minimum and 15-minute proration after the minimum. The hourly rate covers crew, truck, fuel, pad-wrap, dollies, and straps — included, not extra. Stairs, long carries, hoists, crating, and shuttles are stated separately on the written estimate when applicable. The rate is on the written estimate before move day; no surprises.

Questions we get

About Hourly Rate.

What does the hourly rate include?
With us, the rate covers crew, truck, fuel, pad-wrap, dollies, straps, and basic equipment — included. Accessorials (stairs, long carries, hoists, crating, shuttles) are billed separately and stated on the written estimate when they apply. Some carriers charge separately for pads or fuel; confirm inclusion when comparing estimates.
How is the hourly rate set?
By crew size, truck size, and the carrier’s tariff. A 2-person crew at one rate, a 3-person crew at a higher rate, a 4-person crew higher still. The right crew size for your move depends on volume, access, and timing — we recommend the crew size during the estimate.
Is the cheapest hourly rate the best deal?
Not always. The total cost of the move is hours times rate plus accessorials. A clean rate with 15-minute proration and a transparent tariff often beats a lower headline rate that uses 1-hour proration, high minimums on accessorials, or buried fees. Compare written estimates side-by-side.
