Long-Distance Move
Also known as: Long-Haul Move, Out-of-State Move, Cross-Country Move
Definition
A Long-Distance Move is any move where origin and destination are far enough apart that the move is billed by weight and distance rather than hourly — typically 50+ miles, and almost always when the move crosses state lines.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Long-distance moves are quoted on a tariff that factors total shipment weight, total mileage between origin and destination, and any accessorial services (packing, crating, hoisting, storage in transit, long carries). The truck is weighed loaded and empty at certified scales to determine actual weight. Delivery windows span a range of days rather than a single appointment, because the truck may make multiple stops along the route. Long-distance moves typically involve a binding or not-to-exceed estimate, a more detailed pre-move inventory, and Full Value Protection by default for the higher exposure.
Stakes
Why this matters.
Long-distance moves carry more risk than local hourly moves: longer transit times, weather exposure, multi-day storage on the truck, and more handling at origin and destination. The pricing model is different (weight + distance, not hours), the regulatory framework is different (FMCSA federal rules for interstate, TxDMV for Texas intrastate), and the claims process can take longer. Choosing a binding estimate, declaring high-value items on an HVA inventory, and paying for Full Value Protection are all more important on a long-distance move than on a local one.
Our process
How Muscleman Elite handles it.
Muscleman Elite handles long-distance moves out of all 6 Texas locations. We provide a binding written estimate after a complete walk-through, weigh trucks at certified scales, default to Full Value Protection for the longer exposure, and assign a single point of contact to coordinate origin, transit, and delivery. Storage in transit is available if delivery dates need to shift.
Questions we get
About Long-Distance Move.
- When does a move become "long-distance"?
- Most carriers treat anything over 50 miles as long-distance, billed by weight and distance instead of hourly. Any move crossing state lines is long-distance and interstate, regulated by the federal FMCSA.
- How is a long-distance move priced?
- Total shipment weight times the per-hundred-pound rate, plus mileage between origin and destination, plus any accessorial services (packing, crating, long carries, storage in transit). A binding estimate locks the total before move day.
- How long does delivery take?
- Depends on distance and route. A move from Austin to Phoenix may be 3-5 days; Austin to the East Coast may be 5-10 days. The estimate includes a delivery window rather than a single date; we update you as the truck progresses.
