Intrastate Move
Also known as: In-State Move, Texas Move
Definition
An Intrastate Move is any move where origin and destination are in the same state — in Texas, regulated by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (TxDMV) under Texas Transportation Code Chapter 643.
In practice
What it means on a move.
In Texas, intrastate household-goods movers must hold an active TxDMV motor-carrier registration and follow state rules on written estimates, Bill of Lading, valuation disclosures, and claims handling. The TxDMV number appears on contracts, trucks, and advertising. Texas intrastate moves are generally hourly for shorter trips (under 50 miles) and weight-plus-distance for longer ones (Austin to Houston, El Paso to Odessa, etc.). State regulation parallels federal rules in spirit — written estimate, valuation choice, signed Bill of Lading — but enforcement is through TxDMV rather than FMCSA.
Stakes
Why this matters.
Intrastate moves in Texas are not covered by federal FMCSA jurisdiction, so the consumer protections that apply on an interstate move (110% rule, federal disclosure booklet, FMCSA dispute resolution) do not automatically apply. Texas substitutes its own framework through the TxDMV. The practical effect: customers should still expect a written estimate, signed Bill of Lading, valuation options, and a documented claims process — but the enforcement avenue is the TxDMV consumer complaint process rather than a federal one. Verifying TxDMV registration before booking is the equivalent of checking the FMCSA database for interstate moves.

Questions we get
About Intrastate Move.
- How do I verify a Texas mover is licensed?
- Search the TxDMV motor carrier database using the carrier’s TxDMV number, or call the TxDMV regulatory line at 1.888.368.4689. The record shows active registration and any complaint history.
- What protections apply to a Texas intrastate move?
- TxDMV rules require a written estimate, a signed Bill of Lading, valuation disclosure (with at least one no-cost coverage option), and documented claims procedures. Disputes are handled through the TxDMV consumer complaint process.
- Are intrastate moves cheaper than interstate?
- Not necessarily — distance and weight drive cost. A 300-mile Austin-to-Dallas intrastate move and a 250-mile Austin-to-Shreveport interstate move are priced similarly. The regulatory framework differs; the math is comparable.
