MC Number
Also known as: Motor Carrier Number, MC Authority, FMCSA MC
Definition
An MC Number (Motor Carrier Number) is the federal authority identifier issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) to interstate moving carriers, authorizing them to transport household goods across state lines for hire.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Any carrier that moves household goods across state lines must hold an active MC Number from FMCSA. The MC Number appears on the carrier’s website, trucks, advertising, and contracts. Customers can verify a carrier’s MC Number on the FMCSA SAFER public database at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov — the record shows active authority, insurance filings on file, recent safety inspections, and any complaint history. The MC Number is distinct from (but typically paired with) the USDOT Number, which applies to a broader range of motor carriers including freight, passenger, and intrastate operators.
Stakes
Why this matters.
Booking an interstate move with a carrier that does not hold active MC authority is risky. Federal consumer protections (binding-estimate rules, 110% cap on non-binding estimates, mandatory disclosure booklet, valuation requirements, claims procedures under 49 CFR) only apply to carriers operating under valid federal authority. An unlicensed mover offers none of those protections, and dispute resolution typically falls to small-claims court rather than FMCSA enforcement. Checking the MC Number on FMCSA’s database before booking takes 60 seconds and is the single most important due-diligence step for any interstate move.
Our process
How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Questions we get
About MC Number.
- How do I verify a mover’s MC Number?
- Search the FMCSA SAFER database at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov using the carrier’s MC or USDOT number. The record shows active authority status, insurance filings, recent safety inspections, and complaint history.
- What is the difference between an MC Number and a DOT Number?
- The MC Number specifically authorizes interstate transportation of household goods (and certain other regulated commodities) for hire. The USDOT Number is a broader registration for any commercial motor vehicle operating in interstate commerce. Most interstate movers hold both.
- Do I need a mover with an MC Number for an in-state move?
- For a Texas intrastate move, MC authority is not the relevant credential — TxDMV registration is. MC Number applies when origin and destination are in different states. For intrastate Texas moves, verify the carrier’s TxDMV number.
