Definition
Packed by Owner (PBO) is a notation on a moving inventory indicating that the customer — not the moving company — packed the items inside a carton. PBO cartons are treated differently from carrier-packed cartons for damage liability.
In practice
What it means on a move.
When the crew arrives, every box is marked on the inventory sheet. If you packed it, the crew writes PBO next to the box. The crew can't verify the condition of contents they didn't pack and didn't see being packed, so they're not responsible for damage to items inside a PBO carton unless the carton itself is visibly damaged in transit. PBO is normal and expected on most moves — most customers pack at least their books, clothing, and personal items themselves.
Stakes
Why this matters.
PBO matters because it shifts the damage liability boundary. If you pack a stack of plates without proper paper between them and one breaks during transit, that's on you — not the mover. If you pack the plates carefully and the crew drops the box, the box damage might be the mover's fault but the contents may still be excluded if there's no exterior damage to the carton. Understanding PBO before the move helps you decide what to let the crew pack and what to handle yourself. For high-value or fragile items, paying for crew packing is almost always worth it.
Our process
How Muscleman Elite handles it.
Muscleman Elite marks every PBO carton clearly on the inventory and Bill of Lading. We offer professional packing for any items you want covered under Full Value Protection. For fragile, high-value, or specialty items, we recommend our crew handles the packing — it changes the liability picture and we use materials matched to the item.
Questions we get
About Packed by Owner.
- Can I get PBO items covered under Full Value Protection?
- Generally no — PBO contents are typically excluded from valuation unless the carton itself shows damage. If you want full coverage, have the mover pack the box (it becomes a CP, or carrier-packed carton).
- Should I pack everything myself to save money?
- It depends on what's inside. Books, clothing, linens, kitchenware you can replace — pack yourself, save the labor cost. Fragile items, electronics, art, mirrors, lamps — have the crew pack. The premium for packing is small compared to the cost of a broken piece you can't claim.
- What if I packed a box and notice damage at delivery?
- You can still file a claim, but the carrier's first question will be whether the carton shows exterior damage. If not, the assumption is that the items were damaged during your packing or in normal handling, and the claim is unlikely to succeed.
