Pool Table Reassembly
Also known as: Slate re-leveling, Pool table setup
Definition
Pool table reassembly is the process of re-installing the slate playing surface, re-leveling the table, and re-stretching the felt at the destination after a slate-bed pool table has been disassembled for moving.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Slate-bed pool tables (almost all professional and high-end home tables) must be professionally disassembled for moving — the slate alone weighs 600-800 lbs across 3 panels and can crack if mishandled. At destination, reassembly includes: positioning the table base, installing the 3-panel slate carefully, leveling to within 0.005" tolerance (any greater unevenness affects gameplay), and re-stretching the felt across the slate. Professional reassembly typically takes 3-4 hours by 2-person crew.
Stakes
Why this matters.
DIY pool table moves end in cracked slate ~30% of the time. Even successful DIY moves often produce poorly-leveled tables that play incorrectly. Professional reassembly with proper leveling is the only way to preserve gameplay quality. The cost of pool table reassembly (~$400-800) is significantly less than the cost of slate replacement or felt re-installation.
