Reverse Lane Discount

Also known as: Backhaul discount, Empty-truck pricing

Definition

A reverse lane discount is reduced pricing offered on long-distance moves that align with the carrier's existing route in the opposite direction — using a truck that would otherwise return empty after a previous load.

In practice

What it means on a move.

Long-distance moving trucks frequently return empty to the home market after a one-way delivery. Carriers can offer significant pricing discounts (20-40% off standard rates) to customers willing to move in the reverse direction, filling the otherwise-empty truck. Common reverse lanes: Bay Area to Austin (lots of one-way moves headed Austin → Bay Area in reverse), Denver to Permian Basin, Chicago to Austin. Customer flexibility on dates is required.

Stakes

Why this matters.

Reverse lane discounts are real savings — sometimes $1,500-3,000 off a standard long-distance quote. The catch: customer must accept dates within the carrier's route schedule, often with 5-7 days flexibility. Best for customers with flexible move dates or those willing to coordinate.
