Reweigh
Also known as: Re-weigh, Weight verification
Definition
A reweigh is a second weighing of the moving truck at the customer's request, used to verify the shipping weight that determines the final move price on interstate moves.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Federal interstate moving regulations entitle customers to request a reweigh if they believe the original weight ticket is inaccurate. The carrier must reweigh the truck at a certified scale and recalculate the final price based on the new weight. The reweigh is paid by the carrier if the new weight is at least 100 lbs less than the original; paid by the customer if within 100 lbs or higher. Customers should request reweigh when the difference between estimated and actual weight on the bill of lading is more than 10%.
Stakes
Why this matters.
Reweigh protects customers from carrier weight manipulation — adding fuel weight, water weight, or partial loading from another shipment to inflate the bill. Reweigh is a federal right but rarely exercised because customers don't know to ask. For interstate moves where estimate and delivery weight differ significantly, request reweigh in writing before unloading begins.
