Transit Delay
Also known as: Late delivery, Schedule slip
Definition
Transit delay is a delivery later than the agreed-upon date, typically caused by weather, equipment failure, route disruption, or higher-than-expected demand at the carrier's facilities.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Interstate moves typically have a 'delivery spread' (range of days the carrier commits to delivery, e.g., '3-5 days after pickup'). Transit delays occur when delivery slips outside the spread. Federal regulations require carriers to notify customers of delays and provide updates. Some customers are entitled to 'inconvenience claims' for significant delays (per the carrier's tariff).
Stakes
Why this matters.
Transit delays create real customer pain: temporary housing extension, missed work days, school start dates missed. Carriers should communicate proactively. Customers should ask: 'What's your on-time delivery rate? What happens if there's a delay?' Reputable carriers have transparent answers.
