Carrier Packed

Also known as: CP, Carrier-Packed Carton, Mover Packed

Definition

Carrier Packed (CP) is a notation on a moving inventory indicating that the moving company — not the customer — packed the items inside a carton. CP cartons are eligible for full damage liability under the carrier’s valuation coverage.

In practice

What it means on a move.

When the crew packs a box, they mark it CP on the inventory sheet and on the carton itself. CP cartons are packed with appropriate materials matched to the contents — dish-pack with cell dividers for stemware, mirror cartons for framed art, double-wall boxes for electronics, wardrobe boxes for hanging clothing. Because the crew loaded the contents and saw the condition before sealing, the carrier accepts responsibility for the contents during transit, not just for the carton exterior. CP is the counterpart to PBO, and the two notations together account for every carton on a typical move.

Stakes

Why this matters.

The CP versus PBO distinction is the single biggest lever in moving-day damage liability. A CP carton is covered under Full Value Protection for its contents; a PBO carton is generally only covered if the carton itself shows exterior damage. For fragile, high-value, or hard-to-replace items, paying for the crew to pack the box converts the liability from yours to the carrier’s. The cost of CP packing is modest — usually a few dollars per box for materials plus labor time — and small compared to the cost of an uncovered claim on a broken heirloom or electronic.

Our process

How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Muscleman Elite marks every CP carton on the inventory and Bill of Lading. We use materials matched to the item — dish-pack, mirror cartons, double-wall, wardrobe — and we recommend CP packing for any fragile, electronic, or high-value contents you want covered under Full Value Protection. CP packing is quoted in the written estimate before move day.

Questions we get

About Carrier Packed.

Does CP packing cost extra?
Yes — CP packing is billed separately from the move itself, typically a per-box labor and materials charge. The exact cost is on the written estimate before move day. For high-value items, the cost is small compared to the coverage CP provides.
Can I mix CP and PBO cartons on the same move?
Yes — almost every move does. Most customers pack their own books, clothing, and personal items (PBO) and have the crew pack fragile or high-value contents (CP). The inventory records each carton’s status so the liability boundary is clear.
What happens if a CP carton arrives damaged?
You note the damage as an exception on the Bill of Lading at delivery, then file a claim with photos and documentation. Because the crew packed the contents, the carrier’s valuation coverage applies to the contents — not just the carton.
