Labor-Only Move

Also known as: Loading Only, Unloading Only, Hourly Labor

Definition

A Labor-Only Move is a service where the moving company provides crew labor — packing, loading, unloading, or any combination — but the customer supplies the truck, container, or vehicle being loaded.

In practice

What it means on a move.

Customers most often book labor-only when they have rented a U-Haul, Penske, or Budget truck and need help loading it efficiently; when a portable container (PODS, U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT) is dropped at the home for loading; or when a long-distance move uses a freight carrier and the household needs crew to load and unload at each end. Labor-only is billed hourly with a 2-hour minimum and 15-minute proration. The crew brings their own pads, dollies, straps, and tools. The customer is responsible for the truck or container, including any rental insurance.

Stakes

Why this matters.

Labor-only is the right fit when the customer is managing the move logistics themselves but wants professional loading. A well-packed rental truck or container fits more, rides safer, and arrives with less damage than a self-loaded one. The trade-off: labor-only is not a complete move service — the carrier’s valuation does not extend to a customer-supplied truck or container the way it does for a full-service move. Damage during transit on a rented truck is the customer’s responsibility, typically through the truck-rental insurance, not the loading crew.

Our process

How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Muscleman Elite offers labor-only loading and unloading for rental trucks, portable containers, and freight shipments. We bring premium pads, dollies, straps, plywood runners for floor protection, and the same crew skill we use on full-service moves. Labor-only is billed hourly with a 2-hour minimum and 15-minute proration. The written estimate states scope and rate before the crew arrives.

Questions we get

About Labor-Only Move.

Can you load a rental truck for me?
Yes — we load and unload rental trucks (U-Haul, Penske, Budget), portable containers (PODS, U-Pack), and freight shipments. We bring pads, dollies, straps, and floor protection. You supply the truck and any rental insurance.
Am I covered for damage during transit on a rental truck?
The moving company’s valuation typically does not extend to a customer-supplied truck or container in transit. Coverage during transit on a rental truck is through the rental company’s insurance options, which we strongly recommend purchasing for any long haul.
How is labor-only priced?
Hourly with a 2-hour minimum, 15-minute proration after the minimum. Rate is on the written estimate before the crew arrives. No surprises.
