Storage

Portable Storage

Also known as: Container Storage, Vault Storage, Portable Container

Definition

Portable Storage is a storage method where goods are loaded into a weatherproof container or wood vault on-site, then transported to a secure warehouse or kept at the property — used for renovations, staging, gap-storage, and flexible move timelines.

In practice

What it means on a move.

Two main formats exist. Containers (PODS, U-Pack, 1-800-PACK-RAT, MI-BOX) are dropped at the customer’s driveway, loaded by the customer or a labor-only crew, then picked up by the container company and held at their facility — or transported to a new destination for delivery and unload. Wood vaults are a moving-industry standard: roughly 5x7x7 feet of usable space, loaded at origin, sealed, and stored stacked in a climate-controlled warehouse. Both formats let the customer load on their own schedule and access the goods (with appointment) during storage.

Stakes

Why this matters.

Portable storage is the right fit for several common situations: a renovation displaces the household for 6-12 weeks; a sale-and-purchase has a gap of weeks or months; the customer is downsizing and not all items are going to the new home yet; a long-distance move with flexible delivery timing. Versus traditional self-storage, portable storage saves the load-unload step at origin (no driving boxes to a unit) and at destination (no driving boxes from a unit). Versus on-truck storage, portable storage is far more economical for any gap longer than a few days.

Our process

How Muscleman Elite handles it.

Muscleman Elite offers both labor-only loading of customer-supplied portable containers (PODS, U-Pack, etc.) and our own wood-vault storage in the Austin metro. We load with the same crew skill and pad protection as a full-service move — wood vaults are sealed at origin, stacked in our warehouse, and delivered or accessed by appointment. Pricing and terms are on the written estimate before move day.

Questions we get

About Portable Storage.

What is the difference between a container and a vault?
Containers (PODS, U-Pack, etc.) are larger weatherproof units dropped at your driveway and picked up by the container company. Wood vaults are moving-industry storage units (about 5x7x7 ft) loaded at origin, sealed, and stored stacked in a warehouse. Both let you store goods off-site between moves or during renovations.
How long can I store items in a vault?
Indefinitely — wood vaults are designed for long-term storage. Monthly storage rates apply for as long as you need the unit, with access by appointment at the warehouse.
Can you load my portable container for me?
Yes — labor-only loading of customer-supplied portable containers (PODS, U-Pack, MI-BOX, etc.) is a standard service. Billed hourly with a 2-hour minimum and 15-minute proration. We bring pads, dollies, and straps.
