On-Truck Storage
Also known as: Truck Hold, Overnight on Truck, Short-Gap Storage
Definition
On-Truck Storage is the practice of leaving a loaded moving truck parked overnight or for a short gap — typically 1-3 days — between move-out at the origin and move-in at the destination, billed daily.
In practice
What it means on a move.
On-truck storage is the right fit when the gap between move-out and move-in is short, when the shipment is small enough to leave on the truck, and when warehousing the goods would cost more than the daily truck-hold rate. Common scenarios: a closing scheduled for the next morning, a rental turnover with a one-day overlap, a delayed key handoff. The truck is parked at the moving company’s yard or a secure lot, the load remains sealed, and the same crew typically delivers the next day. On-truck storage is billed per day, in addition to the standard move rate. Subject to schedule availability — if the truck is needed for another job, on-truck storage is not possible and SIT or portable storage is the alternative.
Stakes
Why this matters.
On-truck storage solves the most common short-gap problem cleanly: no double-handling, no warehouse load and unload, no extra crew. The trade-off is that the truck is committed to the load for the duration, which limits the carrier’s ability to take other work. That is why on-truck storage is billed daily and capped at a few days in practice. For gaps longer than 3-5 days, transferring to a warehouse (SIT) or portable container is more economical and frees the truck for other work.
Our process
How Muscleman Elite handles it.
Muscleman Elite offers on-truck storage for short gaps between move-out and move-in. Subject to schedule availability. Billed daily, with the rate on the written estimate before move day. The truck is parked at our secure yard with the load sealed; the same crew typically handles the next-day delivery. For gaps beyond 3-5 days, we recommend storage in transit or portable storage instead.
Questions we get
About On-Truck Storage.
- How long can my shipment stay on the truck?
- Typically 1-3 days, depending on schedule availability. Beyond that, the truck is needed for other work and we recommend transferring to warehouse storage in transit or a portable container.
- How much does on-truck storage cost?
- Billed daily — the exact rate is on the written estimate. Generally competitive with warehouse storage for very short gaps because there is no second load and unload.
- Is my shipment safe on the truck overnight?
- The truck is parked at our secure yard with the load sealed. Coverage during on-truck storage matches the coverage on the move itself (Released or Full Value Protection per your selection on the Bill of Lading).
