Long-Term Storage

Long-term storage is used when the gap between move-out and final delivery extends beyond the SIT window (180 days for interstate under 49 CFR 375) or when the customer has no defined delivery date yet. Common scenarios: an extended overseas assignment, a multi-year renovation, downsizing into temporary housing, an inheritance estate held until heirs decide, a sale-and-purchase gap of months. Goods are typically stored in sealed wood vaults (about 5x7x7 ft) or palletized in a climate-controlled warehouse. The customer accesses the goods by appointment. Billing is monthly per vault or per cubic foot, with a separate handling fee for the in-and-out moves at the start and end of storage.

Long-term storage solves the storage problem cleanly when the timeline is open-ended or measured in months. Versus self-storage (PODS, public storage units), professional long-term storage typically offers climate control, pad-wrap on all furniture, sealed vaults, and Full Value Protection coverage during storage. Versus on-truck storage, long-term storage is dramatically more economical for any gap beyond a few days. Versus SIT, long-term storage is the right framework for any storage past the 180-day federal window — at which point the goods convert from SIT under the move tariff to long-term storage under the warehouse’s storage terms.

Goods are typically stored in sealed wood vaults — pad-wrapped, inventoried, and stacked in climate-controlled space. Monthly storage rates apply, with access by appointment. For long-distance customers whose storage extends past the SIT window, we convert the shipment to long-term storage with new paperwork and storage terms. What is the difference between Storage in Transit and long-term storage?

SIT is short-term warehouse storage of a long-distance shipment under federal tariff (up to 180 days under 49 CFR 375). Long-term storage is open-ended monthly storage under the warehouse’s storage terms. Shipments that exceed the SIT window convert to long-term storage with new paperwork.

Is long-term storage climate-controlled?

At our facilities, yes — long-term storage is in climate-controlled space, in sealed wood vaults, pad-wrapped. Climate control protects against humidity damage on wood furniture, finish stress on upholstery, and condensation on electronics over extended storage.

How do I access my items during long-term storage?

By appointment at the warehouse. We schedule access in advance so the vault can be pulled from the stack and opened for retrieval. Frequent access typically warrants a different storage configuration; tell us at the start what your expected access pattern is.
