Lump-Sum
Also known as: Bundled pricing, Single-quote move
Definition
A lump-sum estimate is a single fixed price that combines all moving services into one figure — labor, transit, materials, insurance, packing, unpacking — rather than itemizing each component separately.
In practice
What it means on a move.
Lump-sum estimates trade transparency for simplicity. Customers see one number; the carrier handles the cost composition internally. This works for some customers who want budget certainty without micromanaging line items. The trade-off: customers don't see what they're paying for, and any scope changes or surprises may not be reflected in the lump-sum price. Most reputable carriers offer line-itemed estimates as the standard, with lump-sum as an option.
Stakes
Why this matters.
Lump-sum estimates can hide accessorial charges that the customer doesn't know exist. Without line items, the customer can't verify the actual cost components. Some rogue carriers use lump-sum to mask undisclosed charges that they later try to enforce at delivery. Customers should request line-itemed estimates as the default — line items show what's included, what's optional, and what's truly fixed.
