We are transparent about which portion of the move we do ourselves and which portion runs through partners — because the alternative (an overseas broker scam, an unaffiliated mystery destination crew, a shipment that disappears into a container yard) is the worst experience customers can have.

This is a specialty service we run on a quoted basis rather than a published rate. International moves are not commodity work. The customs paperwork alone differs by destination country, by shipment type (household goods vs. used personal effects vs. commercial), by whether the customer is relocating permanently or temporarily, and by the customer's visa or residency status. The destination port matters. The destination country's import duties and restricted-item rules matter. Two identical apartments going to two different countries on the same week are two completely different quotes.

Why this market is different

Not a generic playbook.

Customs documentation is the move. The household goods are often the simpler part. Customs forms — bill of lading, packing list with values, customer's residence visa or work permit at the destination, certificate of origin where required, restricted-item declarations (alcohol, firearms, certain electronics, food, plants, art) — make up most of the move planner's work. A wrong-form move sits in a destination customs yard for weeks accruing storage fees that the customer pays.

Restricted and prohibited items differ by country. Most countries restrict firearms, alcohol over certain quantities, food items, plants and seeds, certain pharmaceuticals, certain electronics with encryption, and items made from regulated species (ivory, certain woods, certain leathers). Some countries prohibit specific media (books, films, art). The walk-through identifies these and either leaves them behind or coordinates the special permit if available. Some items the customer simply cannot ship — they must be sold, gifted, or shipped separately under a different paperwork track.

Ocean vs. air freight is a real choice. Ocean freight (LCL or FCL container) is the default for full household shipments — significantly cheaper but slower (4-8 weeks transit depending on destination). Air freight is faster (1-2 weeks) but typically 5-8× the cost and limited to a smaller volume. Some customers split: air-freight the immediate-need items, ocean-freight the rest.

Destination handling varies wildly. Some destination cities (London, Paris, Sydney, Toronto, Dubai) have a dense network of professional moving companies that work fluently in English and handle international receiving. Other destinations have far less mature infrastructure. We pre-vet the destination partner before signing the customer; no anonymous broker handoffs.

Insurance + valuation is its own conversation. International moves typically run under appraised-value insurance issued by the international freight forwarder (not the local mover's cargo coverage). The customer's declared values + the carrier's coverage are negotiated in advance.

Origin packing must be customs-grade. Carrier-packed (CP) inventory with detailed packing lists per box is the standard for international moves. Customer-packed (PBO) boxes face higher inspection rates at destination customs and may have higher damage rates. We strongly recommend CP for international.

Our local process

How we actually run it.

1. Initial scoping call. Destination country + city, residence status (work visa, permanent move, returning resident), inventory size, target departure date, customer's sensitivity to ocean vs. air timing.

2. Destination feasibility check. We confirm we have a vetted destination partner in that city. If we don't — we tell the customer up front and discuss alternatives rather than booking a move we can't actually deliver.

3. Detailed inventory walk-through. Each item categorized: standard household goods, restricted items requiring special handling, prohibited items the customer must dispose of separately, high-value items requiring appraisal documentation.

4. Customs documentation prep. We coordinate the bill of lading, detailed packing list with declared values, the customer's residence documents, certificates of origin where required, and restricted-item declarations.

5. Origin packing. Carrier-packed boxes with detailed inventory per box. Photo documentation. Customs-grade labeling.

6. Crate or container load. LCL (less-than-container-load) shipments share a container with other shipments; FCL (full-container-load) shipments use a dedicated container. Most household moves are LCL unless the customer has more than a 4-bedroom household or specific timing requirements.

7. Ocean or air freight. International freight forwarder takes the shipment from our origin warehouse to the destination port. We monitor the shipment against the documented timeline.

8. Destination customs clearance. Destination partner pulls the shipment from the port, clears customs, and handles the final-mile delivery to the customer's new residence. Where the customer is on-site at destination, they review the customs documentation; where they're not, we coordinate remotely.

9. Final delivery + walk-through. Destination partner delivers, unpacks per scope, and walks through the inventory with the customer at the destination address. Damage or missing-item claims open with the customer through the international forwarder's claims process.

Where the customer's new residence isn't ready at destination, the shipment goes into bonded storage at the destination port (billed per day by the international forwarder). Where the customer's departure date is flexible, items can hold at our origin warehouse before the ocean date.

Insurance valuation

Appraised-value insurance through the international forwarder. Customer declares values; carrier coverage negotiated against declared values.

International moves are quoted on a per-project basis after the inventory walk-through. We do not publish a per-cubic-foot or per-pound rate because the destination customs cost, restricted-item handling, and partner-side fees vary too widely between countries. The written quote includes every line item — origin packing, customs documentation, freight, destination handling, and any storage. No surprise fees at destination.

Can I track the shipment?
Yes. International freight forwarders provide tracking against the ocean or air bill of lading. We pass the tracking through to the customer when the shipment departs origin and update on customs clearance status at destination.
What if the destination customs hold my shipment?
The most common cause is documentation discrepancies — declared value mismatch, restricted-item paperwork, missing residence visa. The destination partner clears these by working with customs and the customer's on-site representative. Storage fees may accrue during the hold; we surface that risk in the written quote.
Do you do military overseas moves (OCONUS PCS)?
Not as a DPS-contracted carrier — those move through the government's contracted military forwarders. We can support the personally procured (PPM) portion of an overseas move where the service member is moving outside the government program; the customs documentation and destination handling follow the same partner-network model.
